How to Console into a switch or router for basic setup or configuration
1. Run Putty.exe, choose “Connection type > Serial”
2. If using other terminal emulation software (Hyperterm, SecureCRT, etc.) Configure the baud rate and character format of the serial connection to match these console port default characteristics:

- 9600 baud
- 8 data bits
- 1 stop bit
- No parity
- No flow control
4. Attach the DB-9 female DTE adapter to the serial port on the PC.
5. Run or open the serial connection in Putty (or other terminal emulation software)
6. You should see the switch or router’s POST and software image being loaded. Once switch or router is finished loading, you should get a login prompt after hitting the carriage return.

Steps for Nortel switches and routers are similar, except:
1. Console cable needs to be either a straight-through DB-9 female to DB-9 female, or 2 blue Cisco console cables attached back to back via their RJ-45 connectors.
2. After switch POST and Boot, login prompt will appear after CTRL + Y is pressed.
