2960S & 2960X Stacking Compatibility
Can 2960S and 2960X switches be stacked together?
Yes, however:
1) Both must be LAN Base models
2) You have a stack limit of 4 switches and 40 Gbps max stack bandwidth.
3) The switch SDM templates must match between the switches (use "sho sdm prefer" to check).
4) The appropriate stacking module must be used in each switch (FlexStack for 2960S, FlexStack-Plus for 2960X).
5) The 2960X stacking module must be configured down from 20Gbps to 10Gbps for the 2960S stacking module to match and recognize the stack member.
6) The switches must be running the same version of IOS before they are stacked together. The minimum release that supports both is 15.0(2)EX
So, to configure a 2960X switch to add to an existing 2960S stack:
1) If necessary, upgrade the 2960S stack to a software version matching one that is supported on the 2960X switch (stay away from 15.0(2)SE5)
2) Check the SDM version on the existing 2960S stack and change the 2960X switch to match:
("default" is default on 2960S, whereas "lanbase-default" is the default sdm on 2960X)
Switch#conf t
Switch(config)#sdm prefer ?
default Default bias
lanbase-default Enhanced support for both IPv4 and IPv6 Routing
lanbase-routing Supports both IPv4 and IPv6 Routing
Switch(config)#sdm prefer default
3) Set the stack module speed on the 2960X:
Switch(config)#switch stack port-speed 10
4) Save the config on the 2960X, or you will lose your changes.
5) Install and cable your 2960X switch to the existing 2960S stack, and then power the new switch on.
The 2960X switch should then add itself to the existing stack, and will need it's port configured appropriately.
You can verify the stack and switch members by issuing the command "show switch"
*** To return the stack ring to the default setting, use the command:
No switch stack port-speed

To Remove a Switch Member from a Stack
Make sure the switch stack ring is fully connected prior to any switch removal.
Power off the switch you are planning to remove. If it was the Stack Master a new Master Election will occur.
Physically uncable the stacking cables on the rear of the switch and remove the powered off switch
Close the stack ring loop between the remaining switches.
To Remove Provisioned Switch from a Stack Configuration
Be sure the switch you want to remove from the configuration is powered off and physically removed from the stack.
Next, issue the command:
no switch 4 provision ws-c2960X-48ts
replacing the switch number & model number with the switch number and model you intend to remove
